Neat Freaks and Squirrels
Read more →Hi! My name is Karen and I am a neat FREAK! The freak part of the phrase neat freak kind of rubs me the wrong way. How is it, that being neat is freakish? I will tell you what is freaky… a messy, disorganized house. Being neat and organized just makes sense. Look at the order in which God created the universe. Being neat is just honoring God. By being neat, I am bringing order to my home, and if you aren't watching me I will casually try to neaten up your home as well to bring order to it. It’s what I do, I tidy up. People come to my house and are in awe of my cleanliness, the organization of my panty and refrigerator and I love it. It’s like getting a pair of designer shoes at TJ MAXX.

My Mom Annoys Me
Read more →I am so blessed to have a mother who loves the Lord. Every morning, the first thing she does is read her Bible. She reads it through nearly ever year and probably has been doing that for forty or more years. The last thing she and my father do before going to bed is to pray together. They pray for me, my family, all of my siblings and their families. I love that I am able to call her, ask her questions and know that her answers are based on the word of God. She knows the word so well, and it is...

More Rewarding Than a Fresh Pedicure.
Read more →We have all done it. Someone has asked us to pray for them and we say yes and we don't really do it. We listen, smile and nod and then turn our back without a second thought to their needs or hurts. I think we have all flippantly said “I will pray for you" and then have never followed through. I don't think any of us mean to be so callous. We just forget. We get wrapped up in the moment and our good intentions never amount to anything more. What is worse, however, is to pray for someone when...

Hershey and the Ham
Read more →This past Sunday, we had the Culbertson clan over for Easter. Easter in Southwest Florida is a balmy 80 degrees, so after the meal, we progressed to the back yard pool. Culbertson’s are always ready for a second helping, so we left most of the food sitting out on the counter. Did I mention we have a very large chocolate lab who loves to eat? Who just so happened to stay inside when we all went outside? He’s a great dog, a gentle giant, and rarely grabs food off the counter. But on this day, the temptation was more than he...

Why I Skipped Church on Easter
Read more →I skipped church today, Easter Sunday. That’s right, I stayed home. Why you ask. Our one year old Emery was sick today and we didn’t want to contaminate the rest of the nursery. Did you ever stop to think that may be why many people don’t come to church? They are sick, and don’t want to contaminate the rest of us? The sickness they have is so severe, that our pristine churches, with “perfect” people are just no place for a person who did _______ (fill in the blank). But if there’s one thing that every church should be, it’s...

Dirty ... Stinky ... Feet
Read more →I’ve always looked young for my age – a feature that does me no favors in working with middle and high school students. At one particular time in college, thinking I was big stuff, I taught the middle school Sunday School class. What average college student had an awesome position like that? While most students were sleeping in or slacking off I was at church early. I was there not just bossing around and managing middle school chaos, but helping to frame the minds of these young students– the future of the Church! How important a job! One Sunday, dressed...

Free to Serve
Read more →Growing up in the church, we learned about serving others. We were told that we are to be servants, and that the best way to show the love of God was to serve the people around us: our families, our friends, our communities. So the church at large schedules service events (also known as "service opportunities"). Things like a car care event where single moms and widows can get their car taken care of for free, or a dinner for the homeless of our county once a week. We set a date, gather volunteers and supplies, and a few people...

Spiderman and Jesus
Read more →Ben Parker, usually known as Uncle Ben, is the uncle and surrogate father of Peter Parker, Spider-Man’s alter ego. His death at the hands of a petty thief was the turning point that propelled Peter into the role of a superhero. The most memorable line in the movie “With great power comes great responsibility” is from a conversation between Uncle Ben and Peter, just before his death. Throughout the movie, this phrase becomes the overarching theme. It’s the golden rule of Spider-Man and shapes his entire life from his uncle’s death forward. This phrase is now a part of the...

Paul's Letter to American Christians
Read more →This is a transcript of a sermon delivered by Martin Luther King to Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in 1956. I hope you enjoy as much as I did. I stumbled upon it while doing a google search for Christian Americans Obligtion to the World as I continue to struggle to understand and pray about the blessings we've (all Americans) been put in charge of and how to best use them to serve and love ALL of God's children. Delivered at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church by Martin Luther King, JR Montgomery, Alabama on 4 November 1956. I would like to share with you an imaginary...

Signing up for Slavery
Read more →This blog is from Brian, a slave of Christ Jesus. Have you ever thought of yourself as a slave to God? I hadn't until recently. Switch your bible app to NLT and take a look at the first chapter and verse of James, Jude, 2 Peter and Romans. These are authors of the most important book of all time, and yet each starts their writings with a title of SLAVE. When I think about a slave, I think of someone with no rights, no possessions, and no personal identity; someone who is owned by a master, who must deny himself of...
